I think what I like best about summer is that it reminds me, a tiny bit, of when I went to Hawaii. I went there with my Mom and Dad two years ago (before she was wheelchair bound) and it's one of my most treasured memories. There's a certain magic in the air there that you just don't find anywhere else... the lush plant life everywhere, the total lack of mosquitos (which blew my mind, being from the bug-ridden midwest) and the way you can hear the ocean from almost everywhere. The people are so much calmer and more relaxed, and who can blame them? They live in paradise on earth.
Someday I'm going to go back there. My plan is to get a little place in Oahu , or maybe one of the Wailea Makena condos - a month would be a good start (why not dream big?). Renting a condo rather than staying at some large, impersonal hotel intrigues me - the privacy and personal touch of feeling like a real native just sounds heavanly. And I'm telling you, someday I'm going to retire there. Although I loved Oahu (the nightlife is fantastic!) I'm very intrigued with a little Hawaiian villa in Maui for the peace, quiet and natural beauty it offers... my cousin was married in Maui and she had nothing but good things to say about it! With such perfect weather and happy memories, I can't really think of anywhere ele I'd want to spend my golden years.
Oh well. Until then, I can put a tiki in my garden and pretend....
